India lifted 271 million people out of poverty between 2006 -2016 as per UN's Multi Dimensional Poverty Index (MPI) 2019. MPI factors a persons deprivation across 10 indicators in health, education, and standard of living.
India & Cambodia reduced their Multidimensional Poverty values the fastest. More rural Indians overcame poverty in this period than those in cities - demonstrating pro-poor development. The steepest decline in poverty was seen in Jharkhand.
It nearly halved from 75% in 2005/06 to 47% in 2015-16 In this decade India improved access to assets, sanitation, nutrition and cooking fuel. But over 19 % of India's population is still vulnerable to multi dimensional poverty. 21% of Indians live below the income poverty line which means that their purchasing power is less than $2 per day.
Over 2/3rds or 886 million of the world's multidimensionally poor - live in middle-income countries.
