There are 7.8 million children with disabilities in India. These are children with either visual or hearing impairment, learning disabilities, cerebral palsy, mental illness or leprosy.

27% of children with disability have never been to school. The situation is starker among five year olds with disabilities. 75% of them do not go to any educational institutions.

Most children with disabilities opt for National Institute For Open Schooling (NIOS). But the enrolment rates at NIOS is also declining.

There is a big gap in responsive & assistive technologies for Children with disabilities. Under Right To Education Act schools must accommodate children with disabilities. But there is no coordinated authority to enforce the standards.

Karnataka and Kerala are the only states whose RTE rules provide assistive devices and reasonable accommodation to children with disabilities.
