Gorakhpur Deaths Reveal UP Healthcare Mess But It Is Not The Worst

Gorakhpur in eastern Uttar Pradesh, in the news for the death of nearly 70 children in n Baba Raghav Das Medical College Hospital, was ranked 15 among 75 districts based on 7,659 estimated infant deaths in 2015-16, according to data from the health information management system (HIMS) of the health ministry.

Allahabad in southern Uttar Pradesh reported maximum estimated infant deaths (14,032), data show.

As the latest available health data reveal, UP has India's highest infant mortality rate (probability of a child dying before the age of one per 1,000 live births) of 64 and under five mortality ratio (probability of a child dying before the age of five per 1,000 live births) of 78, IndiaSpend reported on August 16, 2017.

The HIMS calculates the estimated infant deaths data using the following formula:

Estimated number of infant deaths = IMR (infant mortality rate)*Est. Live Births/1000

According to this calculation, Uttar Pradesh saw estimated infant deaths of 288,230 in 2015-16.

Allahbad was followed by Sitapur (11,642) and Hardoi (10,683), HMIS data show.
