India has a long history when it comes to opium. From the time of Mughals to the British to post Independent India, if one thing has not changed, then it is the value of opium. Wars were fought to make its trade legal.

Today India is the only legal exporter and one of the for legal producers of opium. But India's geographical location makes it vulnerable for illicit drug trafficking.

Wedged between the Golden Crescent and the Golden Triangle -the world’s two largest areas of illicit opium production, India is both a destination and a transit route for opiates produced in these regions.

In fact, a huge amount of legal opium produced within the country is transferred into the hands of illegal channels which in turn is used to produce heroin and other drugs.
