India's position on the World Happiness Index has been dropping drastically every year. In the 2019 World Happiness Report (WHR), India holds 140th rank out of 156 countries - which means India is among the top 20 unhappy countries in the world.

The parameters used to measure happiness levels of citizens are freedom, generosity, life expectancy, social support and corruption. The report further goes on to create a link between a country's government policies and the happiness of its citizens.

Therefore, the report proposes that happier people are more likely to be engaged in politics, community service, volunteering etc. Likewise, happier people tend to reelect the ruling parties into power as well.

Will India's growing unhappiness affect the outcome of the general election 2019?
