In 2015, as per last available data, 1,885 people across India died due to “structural collapses”. Among the top three states was Maharashtra with 187 structural crashes.

According to the BMC, there are 499 dilapidated buildings in Mumbai. Structures that are "unsafe/dangerous inhabitable” that “need to be vacated and demolished". 64 of these buildings are in the N ward encompassing the eastern suburbs of Mumbai.

On July 16, the collapse of Kesarbai building in Dongri killed 13 people. The BMC categorised the structure as a C1 building almost 2 years ago.
