In India, for every 100 girls born alive, 7 are aborted. The Population Research Institute observes that everyday 2332 girls are aborted in the womb. This is the highest number of sex selective abortions anywhere in the world.

The rise in sex selective abortions is mainly linked to son preference in Indian families. The result of which is 63 million women missing from India's population.

India is among the top 10 countries worldwide with a wide gender gap. In India, there are 93 girls for every 100 boys. Skewed sex ratio leads to increased violence against women, trafficking of girls and slow economic growth.
