In India, 6,585 people died in rain-related natural calamities since 2015. That’s five Indians every day. 15% of all deaths in that period have been from Bihar, where low lying plains get flooded every monsoon.

Rains battered Assam & claimed 74 lives this monsoon. 2,00,000 have been inforced into relief camps and 15 rhinos have died in the Kaziranga National Park. More than 40 million hectares of India’s land is prone to floods.

Since 1953, more than a lakh people have died due to heavy rains and floods. If present trends hold, India could see a 6x increase in the number of people exposed to severe floods by 2040.
