113 commuters have been injured in stone pelting incidents on Mumbai's railway network since 2013. While 118 cases of stone pelting have been registered by the Mumbai railway police , But only about 21 % of the cases have been solved.

Those involved in stone-pelting mostly are said to drug addicts, rag pickers and those living in slums by the railway tracks. Most of the cases on stone pelting were registered in the jurisdiction of Kurla and Kalyan. While 18 cases were registered in Kurla. 17 were registered in Kalyan.

There are about 2500 CCTV cameras that form the part of surveillance infrastructure at suburban stations and foot-over bridges along Central Railway. Operating 2855 train services daily, the Suburban Railway caters to 8 million passengers daily.
