Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Surat are among some of the major cities of India which may get wiped out by 2050 due to rising sea levels.

Some 250 million people around the world would be affected due to it — a figure which is three times more than previously thought, according to a study by Climate Central.

In India alone, an estimated 31 millions, who live on the coastal areas, are at risk of annual flooding. A number that can go up to another four million, and further rise to 51 million by the end of this century.

In 2014, India was responsible for nearly 7 per cent of greenhouse gas emissions. The study suggests that even if carbon emissions were cut down, the sea levels will still rise half a metre by 2050.
