India's election commission reported 154 cases of fake news during the 2019 general elections. It was the first time India's election watchdog set a code of conduct for social media platforms to curb the spread of fake news.

With 97 cases Twitter received the most complaints. Facebook was alerted 46 times to cases of fake news on the site, while 11 complaints were flagged off to YouTube. The complaints ranged from misinformationrelating to security, transportation and transparency of Electronic Voting Machines; use of indelible ink etc.
India conducted the world's largest democratic exercise between April and May 2019. 67 % of India's eligible voters cast their vote in these elections.
