Maharashtra had the highest number of suicides in India in 2016, according to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). A total of 17,195 people in the state took their own lives during the year. It is estimated that 14 out of every one lakh people in the state committed suicide in Maharashtra.
Most of the suicides were committed by those related to the farming sector. In 2016, 3600 farm deaths were recorded, compared to 3030 in 2015. Besides, 2725 housewives in the state also committed suicide — the highest in the country.
