45% of deaths of children under 5 in India are due to hunger or malnutrition. Malnourished children are either too short or too thin for their age and these children are at higher risk of dying from common infections as it delays recovery.

Malnutrition in a child is linked to the health of the mother. A third of women of reproductive age in India are undernourished with a body mass index (BMI) of less than 18.5 kg/m2.
