Nearly 20 million tonnes of paddy straw is burnt every year in India between October and November. Farmers in Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Punjab burn straw to prepare fields for the sowing season. But what is a ritual for the farmers is a poison for people living in Delhi , parts of UP and Haryana.
In late September this year, 384 incidents of stubble burning incidents was recorded. But the Indian government claims that these incidents are on the decline. Since 2016, there has been a decline in stubble burning incidents by 41% in all 3 states.
