Women In Tihar
Jailed DMK leader Kanimozhi (in the 2G telecom spectrum scam case) made a plea to the Supreme Court in June that she be granted bail because she has a 10-year-old child to look after. Touching indeed. IndiaSpend decided to look at whether Kanimozhi is the lone woman (or man) in such a predicament. Well, depends. Tihar Jail (where she is housed) has 11,719 inmates, of which 523 are women, as of April, 2011. As of 31 December 2010 (for when details are available) there were 10,856 inmates. Of these, 52% of males were married but the same figure for females is 81%. | |
Female 'offendors' are older (between 31 and 50 years) as compared to the median male average of 21 to 30 years. Reason: most of the women are in for dowry offences. Would be fair to assume Kanimozhi is not the only one at Tihar missing her child. |
